Additional details The 100 is the original Pelikan model, and was generally available with a green body and, to a lesser degree, gray and black. All had black caps. In 1938, the company changed the design to the 100N, with its more rounded turning knob (but generally offered in the same three colors).

As any Pelikan collector knows, the 100N was also created in a handsome tortoiseshell color (some with tortoise caps, and others with red caps. The tortoiseshell 100N pens are much less common than the other three colors, but do appear from time-to-time. But when they appear, they draw a premium price of anywhere from $700 to $1000.

The pen for sale here is similar to the 100N with a tortoiseshell body and red cap (including the red turning knob and filler unit), yet it is the original 100 model. The derby even shows the original design with the four baby pelicans rather than the later two. While it is certainly not the ultra-beautiful (and ultra-expensive) all-lapis, coral, or jade 100 models, it is so rare as to make the tortoiseshell 100N seem pedestrian.

While I specialize in vintage Montblancs, I am extremely familiar with vintage Pelikans. This pen is the first example of this color combination in this model that I have ever seen. It is a stunning pen, and a great addition to the serious Pelikan collector's pen case.

The pen is unrestored, and will need a new cork to fill. Because of the rarity of this pen, I will leave that to buyer to address.
